Our Programs

We offer programs and courses to get you started in a new career in the construction industry. Our comprehensive programs have been developed to meet the needs of the commercial carpentry and related trades by producing job ready applicants using the latest in training methods and materials.

Our Programs offer an extensive portfolio of safety training, practical hands on experience, theory and personal development skills.

Individuals applying for our 6 week and 12 week programs must have either completed Grade 12/GED equivalent or a minimum of Grade 10 with mature student status. Applicants to our 12 week programs are also subject to a pre-screening interview and aptitude assessment. Additional prerequisites for specific courses may be included in the course descriptions.

12 Week Programs

As safety is first and always at CMTC, students of our 12 week program will be trained and certified in: WHIMS, Safety Orientation, Fall Arrest, Emergency First Aid, Aerial Lift, Power Industrial truck Operation (Fork Lift) and Scaffold Awareness.

Commercial Carpentry Skills Development Program (CCSDP)

This program is divided into two 6 week components. The first 6 weeks of the program focuses on an introduction and practical experience in Commercial Carpentry including:

  • Safety training, PPE, and certifications
  • The nature of wood
  • The safe use of hand and power tools
  • Basic wood frame construction, Floor, Wall
  • Ceiling and Roof Framing
  • Applied Mathematics for the carpentry trade
  • Work place communication

Weeks 7 thru 12 is your choice of an elective in either Formwork or Scaffold Erection. Details of these electives follows in the 6 week portion of this program.

Interior Systems Program

This program focus is on various applications of metal framing used in commercial construction projects including layout and installation of drywall. Participants will receive theoretical and practical experience in:

  • Safety training, PPE, and certifications
  • The safe use of hand and power tools
  • Metal framing applications
  • Blueprint reading
  • Estimating
  • Layout
  • Suspended ceilings
  • Advanced and specialty framing
  • Drywall installation
  • Ceiling installation
  • Work place communication

6 Week Programs

Formwork Program

Program participants will learn the most important aspects of concrete formwork including identifying materials, form hardware, and formwork safety practices. Thorough theory and practical applications, students will be experience in fabricating various formwork applications including:

  • Safety certified in Fall Protection
  • Form hardware
  • Concrete interior and exterior stair and wall forms, pilaster and column forms
  • Foundation footing forms
  • Gang forms
  • Concrete columns with drop panel
  • Flatwork combing suspended slab with concrete beams

Scaffold Program

Program participants will work with both tube and clamp systems scaffold. Hands on scaffold erection and inspections are critical components of this course. Program objectives:

  • Safety certified in Fall Protection and Confined Spaces
  • Importance of planning for erection and dismantle of scaffold
  • Scaffold safe use guidelines
  • Tube and clamp scaffold theory
  • Tube and Clamp mobile scaffold frame and total system scaffolds
  • Scaffold rigging

2 Day Courses

Aerial Lifts

In this course participants will learn how to operate a Scissor lift, an Articulating lift and a Zoom Boom lift. Through theatrical overview and practical applications students will:

  • Be knowledgeable about the types of safety equipment common to all aerial lifts
  • Become knowledgeable about manually propelled work platforms and mast climbing work platforms
  • Perform necessary maintenance and be familiar with safety precautions for aerial lifts.

Powered Industrial Truck Operator

The focus for participants of this course is to learn how to operate an Industrial lift truck and a Rough Terrain lift truck. Participants will learn basic procedures of operation, inspections and maintenance. Through theory and practical applications students will:

  • Safe operating practices, and use standard hand signals
  • Name and describe the seven categories of powered industrial trucks
  • Understand the importance of lift truck stability
  • Perform visual and operation inspections

Confined Spaces

This two day course provides basic awareness of working in confined spaces. Includes hazard control, legislation, responsibilities and rescue planning.
